First, there is what is known as a straight line parallelism or an AA, BB, pattern of parallelism in which consecutive lines parallel each other and help interpret one another. For example, Psalm 44:1:
The second form of parallelism is known as step parallelism or an ABC, ABC pattern. Psalm 90:6 provides an example of step parallelism:
The third form of parallelism is referred to as inverted parallelism or chiasm. In a chiastic arrangement an ABC, CBA pattern is followed in which an idea is presented and then repeated backwards in reverse order. Jesus used this form when He quoted Isaiah 60:1-2 in Luke 4:18 as is evident in this literal translation:
